FitG Update: The Giver

I'd seen THE GIVER by Lois Lowry on so many favorite-book lists over the years, and what with it being a Newbery Medal winner, I couldn't resist adding it to my Fill-in-the-Gaps list (which I have neglected for much too long, by the way).

I can see why THE GIVER received such accolades. What a fascinating concept and world! And it was a page-turner, too. I was so curious to find out what would happen to Jonas (who was precious!).

I think what makes this book so sticky (in a good way, in that it STICKS in your head) is that the world was so haunting and brilliantly (and patiently) unraveled. As a writer, I received a good lesson in what it looks like to show-don't-tell.

Have you read THE GIVER?

Next up in my Fill-in-the-Gaps reading challenge:

I'm only on the second chapter, but the voice in this book is freakin' amazing. I'm enjoying it so much!

What are you reading?

  1. I love Mo! I think she and Ella Mae would get along well:)

And even though I never loved THE GIVER, I do think it's a book that's well worth a read. Way to fill in those gaps!

  3. The Giver is in my top 5 of all time favorite books!!! Enjoy it. I've read it several times, and I love giving it as a gift to young teens on their birthday or Christmas! One of two books I have bought several copies of!

  4. "The Giver" was one of my gap books for a while, too--I'd heard of it when I was younger, but it wasn't until college, when my classmates spent a good hour of our class on Plato's Republic discussing the way Lowry approached the ideas Socrates had raised, that I knew I really had to read it! (Yes, this class was particularly awesome.)
And Three Times Lucky is literally on my waiting-to-be-read shelf. I have a few library books to finish up first, but I'm super-excited to read it--can't wait to hear what you think!

  6. I read Perks of Being a Wallflower, then just finished Lizz Free and Die, by Lizz Winstead and then started Let's Pretend This Never Happened. My son read the Giver, and then informed me of the hullabaloo about it. I should try that next!

  7. I read The Giver forever ago, and just in the last couple of months I read the 4th and final book of the series. The Giver was the best one. It is haunting and the slow revelations of what this society is like is Brilliant (with a capital B).

  9. I LOOOVE The Giver. I love the companion books as well, though I have not yet read the 4th (Son). I read the book in 2nd grade on my own, then 6th grade for class, 7th grade for class, 10th grade for class and 2x in college for two classes. LOL! Let's just say I have read it A LOT. ;-)

  10. I recently re-read The Giver and enjoyed it, so beautifully written. Three Times Lucky is on my list. Sticking with this middle grade trend, I am reading Nobody's Family Is Going to Change by Louise Fitzhugh, who wrote Harriet the Spy. It's so great!

  13. I've heard a lot about this too - must read it. I'm reading Terry Pratchett's Dodger - which sadly isn't his best and is dragging a bit - and Rachel Morgan's The Faerie Guardian, which is great!
