What are your best working conditions?
I like (and we're talking ideals here):
- Quiet
- Something to drink (ie. tea, water or Dr. Pepper, depending on time of day)
- Privacy
- Location
- The tidiness of the room in which I'm sitting
So does music, though I can handle it playing in another room.

I like writing to music. Movie scores are the best. I'm not too picky where I write, but usually it's at the desk top. If there are kidlets running around, writing is a no go, so I get up early or stay up late. Depends on my mood. ;)
ReplyDeleteI need music to write. Not the TV. People talking is distracting and I find myself typing what people are saying-lol.
ReplyDeleteI have a "writing music" playlist on my iPod, but most of the time I'll listen to anything. For some reason music fades to the background for me, whereas anything else is a distraction.
I must be alone. Since I live alone that's not a problem. And I don't care what's cluttered on my desk. If I eat, I have to stop for the most part, so if I'm really on a streak, it'll be lunch time before I realize I haven't had breakfast.
But I love it!
Ha! Your daughter is so cute.
ReplyDeleteI need quiet and no distractions. I don't do well in short spurts-- I prefer to have at least an hour at a time to work. I usually turn off my internet, too.
I like quiet. Library. No distractions. At a desk.
ReplyDeleteI'm exactly the same. As long as it's quiet, I'm good. Sometimes I work in different rooms of the house just for different atmosphere, but it doesn't really matter to me.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to write in absolute silence. I can handle writing to music without words (which works well, since my husband listens almost exclusively to film scores), but I can't imagine writing to music WITH words. I don't eat or drink anything while I write, and like you, location doesn't bug me in the slightest. (So long as I'm not too hot. Or maybe that's just my pregnant self talking...)
ReplyDeleteI write anytime, anywhere, as long as I have my laptop. I've written in the passenger seat of the car, in the middle of my kids playroom, and at a concert once. Whenever I get inspiration I have to write it down before I forget. If I can block out all the noise that comes with being a mother of two rambunctious little tykes, I can pretty much block out anything. :)

ReplyDeleteMine is similar to yours, except unfortunately I am picky about whether the room I'm in is clean...I have to hide in a little clean spot if I don't want housework to distract me!
ReplyDeleteAnd I like listening to period music when I'm writing historical fiction...
Fun post!
Can't write with music in the room but the television goes over my head. I think it's because I always have to sing along to music (aren't you glad you're not my neighbour?!) However about an hour ago I was in the same state as your wonderful daughter. I was asleep next to the keyboard!
ReplyDeleteI can't have music going while I write. Sadly, I have an easier time tuning out the kids than the T.V. (at least if it's a show i'm interested in). I've noticed that I do much better when the internet isn't on. I'm so easily distracted!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to have silence as well. Too distracting and I just can't think. I am not place specific, but we'll see if that changes. (Starting to fall in love with my writing desk in the window...)
ReplyDeleteMy ideal conditions are a lot like yours- quiet, privacy, coffee or tea. I've tried to write at coffee shops and they are a little too distracting for me. My favorite times have been when I've been able to go to the library all by myself. I think I'm inspired by being surrounded by books. That sounds heavenly right now...
ReplyDeleteLove the picture!
ReplyDeleteI like it quiet, if there is any music it needs to be low. As for the room...I like working at coffee shops, probably because there I don't have a dishes, floors, and laundry screaming at me. And I'm child-free...but that is ideal.
Reality, in the middle of all the screams...LOL
What a gorgeous picture! Honestly, just so cute!
ReplyDeleteMy absolute best time to work is when the house is in absolute quiet, the world around me quiet too. In other words, the wee small hours! That's my favourite time, but I write every moment I can find!
I don't like the television on too loud in the background though. I've been known to get really grumpy over that, but you know when you have a family, you write whenever, wherever!
Hope you are well!
I must have music without lyrics, something to drink, and a loose plan of where I'm going.
ReplyDeleteOh, and if I want to be really productive, I have to meditate at least 15 minutes beforehand. Yes, I'm *that* weirdo :)
In the morning, in my little computer corner, with a cup of coffee...until I'm so stiff I have to stand up.
ReplyDeleteI need to have a neat, relatively uncluttered space to work. And while I don't mind noise so much, I do prefer quietness, too. :)
ReplyDeletei have a chair in my bedroom with a window overlooking the woods...i love the view, but can also write @ night w/curtains closed. i'd prefer no music, but i've found the only way to drown out the distractions in my house is to pop on my skullcandy headphones and listen to pandora. i also have 2 "theme songs" i listen to on the elliptical machine to remind me of my protagonist's emotional state while i ponder plot twists. silence truly is golden, but it's also frequently unavailable to this mom!
ReplyDeleteThat is just the cutest photo, the hand that her little face rests on is so chubby and adorable!
ReplyDeleteRe work, I need quiet and a tidy room, otherwise I just start to tidy around me.
What a cutie! I am very much like you. Quiet for sure. No nearby music. But I write best if I'm just with paper and pen because the computer offers too many distractions. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie! I have a picture of my daughter asleep on the floor with all her little animals. A few minutes before she'd be screaming that she was not tired.
ReplyDeleteI need quiet, some order in my life. I don't have any right now since we just moved in this weekend and now the real work begins of making this house a home. But it's gorgeous outside ... so I take my breaks on the back porch with a cup of tea.
