Dancing Horses

Maybe I'm so fascinated by this because I'm a Hong Kong girl and in Hong Kong there aren't many horses. Maybe all of you reading this blog see this sort of thing every day and are like, "Okay, that's boring."

But for me this is SO COOL.

Every year on Labor Day our little town has a States' Day parade, which is kind of a big deal. Everybody goes, all the floats decked out in princesses glide past, and people throw candy to our kids. We look forward to it.

At the end of the States' Day Parade are these dancing horses. I'm not kidding. They really dance.

I was cheering so loudly for them, I actually went hoarse. (*ahem*) If you don't believe me, you will hear all the stupidness of my cheering in the video.

And all the people around me probably thought I was crazy because they've lived in our little town all their lives and have watched the dancing horses EVERY SINGLE YEAR of their entire existences.

But for me, it's pretty cool.

So, what amazing thing happens where you live?

  1. Cool! Isn't fun when you find something so interesting and exciting you feel like a kid again? Love that.

  2. That was kinda cool. I wonder if it's hard to get them to do that. Like does it take a talented horse? Or can any horse do that with training? These are the questions I have. :)

  3. Ok, random history here because I can't resist: In the 18th century an English cavalier named Philip Astley trained his military horse to dance--the waltz, the minuet, and the like--and eventually he opened a school for equestrian training and then the VERY FIRST CIRCUS in the world: Astley's Amphitheatre. The audience members claimed that Astley's horses were more graceful on their four feet than the Paris Ballerinas on two!
I thought that was so cool that I centered my most recent ms around Astley's, and my main character rides a dancing horse.
So it was pretty cool seeing your video! I would have cheered myself hoarse, too. :)

  5. Faith wins the blog-commenting award for the day. Any questions about dancing horses, ask Faith. :D I LOVE having a historical-novelist in my corner!

  6. I've only seen dancing horses in the circus ... and I loved them (so you also know why I loved Faith's ms). I love small town celebrations. Here on Daniel Island, there are fishing, kayaking, and oyster celebrations.

  7. How fun! I've always loved the Fourth of July parade by my parents' house, but there are only fancy old cars, not any dancing horses!

  10. So cool!! Have you ever heard of Lipizzaner stallions? They do some pretty cool dancing too.

Now I feel like I live in a boring place because we don't have something fun like that going on... ;)

  11. That is cool! I don't think we have anything amazing around here, though I guess it's pretty cool to go up in the St. Louis arch and hear how it was built.

  12. That is so cool. If you want to see more dancing horses, check out the Lipizzaner Stallions. They actually do ballet to music. I did a story on them when they were in Seattle back in my journalism days. *feels a novelish idea coming on* ;)
