Healthy Writers Club: Bob Harper Is My Trainer

Shallee McArthur had the brilliant idea to start The Healthy Writer's Club. I am jumping on the band wagon  because I've always enjoyed working out.

Yes, you heard me right. I enjoy working out.

And the fact that I enjoy it is such a gift, I really should put it to use. I mean, it makes me healthier, it means I can eat more cake and I feel more energized. Besides that, I'm a stay-at-home mom. I'm busy, but I have the ultimate flexible morning schedule. The butt-in-chair life of a writer is making me flabby. And I'm drinking too much Dr. Pepper. So I told myself: NO MORE EXCUSES.

I meant to get my baby jogger tire pumped up so I could start walking again, but that hasn't worked out yet. So, instead, I went to the library and borrowed the Bob Harper strength training workout.

Of course, the remote for our DVD player is lost right now, so I can only do the hour-long work out, because that's the first listing on the menu and accessible by pressing PLAY on the machine. *rolls eyes* And I do have time to work out, but not time for a whole hour, so I've been doing the hour workout in stages.

The first day I did ten minutes ... and then my daughter accidentally turned off the DVD player. (And because the remote is lost, I didn't have the patience to start it all over again and sit through the intro that I can't fast-forward.)

The second day I did twenty minutes ... but quit when my baby daughter was clinging to the back of my legs when I was trying to jump back into push-up pose.

Today I managed over thirty minutes before the whining and crying began (not me, them). Getting better.

And oh my goodness, I'm so glad I'm doing this, because my muscles are sore. But it feels great because I know I'm actually using those muscles for something other than lifting children and carrying loads of laundry up and down the basement stairs.

Life is good.

So, are you up for joining the Healthy Writer's Club? I'll be posting about my progress occasionally on Fridays. Maybe one of these days I'll actually work up to the entire one-hour Bob Harper workout with five pound weights (as opposed to the two-pounders I've been using)!

What do you do to stay in shape?

  1. I hate exercising. Have never liked it. But I use the treadmill every day. I don't go fast, but I'm on for 45 minutes. It's my reading time, which means I can't go fast anyway. Most of the time the kids leave me alone, but sometimes they bug me.

  2. I get it. My endorphins get me out there running 3-4 times a week. And lately they've been pushing me to run longer and harder.

Must find a way to get back at those sneaky little endorphins.

  3. You're such a spring chicken. I walk the dog twice a day. That's it. Once in a while I'll put on my ballet CD. But then the cat attacks me.

  4. Go you! I sneak in jogging on T/H when girlie is at preschool. Sat. depend on if husband is working. But we do have an exercise bike I make myself use on occasion. :)

  5. Love this idea! I joined a gym in July and am already feeling so much more energized. I do a mix of water aerobics, stationary bike, rowing machine, lap swimming and weight training. I get to the gym 2-3 days a week.

I think I'm motivated to get my money's worth out of the membership. And I like variety.

  6. Uggh. Now I feel guilty. I skipped my run yesterday with the knowledge that I would be able to make it up this morning. Only to realize I had to go watch my kids exercise in their Jog-a-Thons this morning instead of me jogging. I guess I will have to wait until this evening.

But I have been so good since we bought our (Baby Trend) jogger in July. Running almost every other day, and last week I added situps after my run. I will have to do more strength training soon because a 35 minute run and 120 crunches only take you so far!

I have lost about 8 pounds since I started (in July) and finally am fitting into my crop pants more comfortably - just in time to shelve them for next spring! LOL!

Good luck to you Amy! :-)

  7. I guess that's one good thing about teaching PE for several hours each day - my work out is built in! :)
I used to do the 8-minute Abs and Buns. On VHS tape. Which tells you how long ago that was.

  8. I do elliptical and occasional yoga. I need to do more, though. I'm in a 2 week dry spell.

  10. That's awesome you love exercising. I do...sometimes. :) And your exercising progress made me smile, because I know exactly how it goes with kids hanging all over you! Good luck. :)
