Summer's Coming!

Summer is creeping up on us. Here's how I can tell:

1. We put the kids to bed WAY after their bedtime, but it's still bright outside.
2. Flowers like this are blooming in our yard:
YAY poppies!

How gorgeous can you get?
3. The Dashingly Handsome Sidekick has started coaching football again (which means hello single motherhood!).
4. The kids' activities are slowing down. We're done with gymnastics and piano, but not ballet.
5. My preschooler has graduated.
6. Everyone is tired.
7. I'm getting lots of paper notices from my kids' schools reminding me about field trips and pajama days and end-of-year parties, etc.
8. The DHS is staying up until the wee hours of the morning grading papers.
9. The calendar says it's flippin' JUNE already.
10. I'm not getting any writing done whatsoever thanks to reasons 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6.  (Hopefully I can figure out a summer schedule soon that includes a big afternoon or evening chunk of writing time.)

How are you coping with imminent summer? Excited, scared, indifferent?

  1. The poppies just pop out at you!

    We're dealing with 1, 2 (except it's umpiring), 6, 7, 8 (except it's me who's staying up late).

I'm ready for summer ... and I have a feeling it's going to be a whirlwind ... I'll let my novel stew while I work on shorts.

  2. I just spent two and a half hours designing and printing off About Me books for my preschool classes to work on, and I'm totally stressing about next week's Water Day and Graduation (not sure why we have a Water Day when we have no equipment for it). But stressing is how I plan. It'll come together. And next year, I won't have to stress because I'll know what I'm doing. I'm looking forward to having my kids home for the summer. They play really well together (which means writing/revising time for me, or so I hope).

    Your poppies are lovely.

  3. I'm frantically doing revisions because I know once school's out, the writing is going to take a nosedive. :P

I want to be finished (and have the ms out with beta readers) so that I can spend my limited summer hours researching/planning my next project.

  4. Isn't this spring to summer transition so tricky??? So much coming and going. Plus, we are deep in t-ball season and trying to make up for so many rain days. Ack, end of school party tomorrow and I still have no teacher gifts. MomFail.

  5. I was going to write, "My poppoies are ready to pop, too!" And then I looked outside and one popped since last night! Yay - we have a lot of them and they are short lived but gorgeous. Yay!

I'm with you on the June freak-out - HOW DOES TIME MOVE SO FAST?!?!

  6. Oh yes it's definitely here. Our poppies (lovely, by the way) have already come and gone about two months ago now... and this week it's already in the 100's. :(

  7. I'm excited for summer and WARMTH. My schedule doesn't change too much since I don't have kids in school, and my husband's work/school schedule stays about the same. Sounds like your summer is the busiest time of the year! Good luck with everything and have fun. :)

  8. Love your poppies! Our tulips are just finishing up their run - nothing else yet :)

June is crazy busy for me - can't wait until July!!!

  9. Those flowers are gorgeous. I wish I had more color in my landscape.

I can't wait for the summer. I'm a teacher, so it's vacation time.

  10. The travel bugs that live in my bones are getting restless, so our two major trips to Spain and US/Canada should sort out my itchy marrow. I'm ditching all work commitments and focusing on being Mama!

I've got my sense of humour intact, so let's see how the summer goes...

  11. First, THANK YOU! Your suggestion to uncheck the keep me signed in box did the trick and I could post again on comments embedded below the post! Yay! You are my heroine!

Second, we are in a drought and have high pressure with hot temperatures. Looking at those pictures was delightful. As far as writing,I've let the weather affect my attitude and work ethic. So,I've been losing myself in some good books and thoroughly enjoying myself. I'll let the guilt get to me later.

  12. I'm glad I'm not the only slacker about writing. :D So many things going on though. Hard to keep it all straight.

    Happy Summer!

  13. That's one of the things that I love about the summer - the different array of colours that you just don't see at any other time of the year.

  14. The poppies are lovely!

School finishes here tomorrow. Then my kiddo and I are heading to the lake for a writing and reading retreat. The hubby is coming down to visit us a couple times....We are looking forward to soaking up some summer heat. :)

Good luck with your summer schedule.

  15. I like your list much better than mine. Mine would include the fact that 1) it's been in the hundreds for six days straight, 2) we're bombarded by the constant hum of the A/C, 3) the electric bill is through the not-nearly-insulated-enough roof, and 4) we are all loath to go outside.
But on the positive note, since it's so hot, I'm either floating in the pool or writing!

  16. My kids finished school last week, so that's definitely the start of summer around here. So far, so good. :)
